Hana Maika'i Award
This is the text of the letter/certificate sent to Pastor Bill Stonebraker and Calvary Chapel of Honolulu by then-Mayor Jeremy Harris.
August 22, 1995
Dear Rev. Stonebraker:
A few years ago, when George Bush accepted his party’s nomination for President, he talked about America as “a nation of communities, of tens and tens of thousands of ethnic, religious, social, business, labor union, neighborhood, regional and other organizations, all of them varied, voluntary, and unique…a brilliant diversity spread like stars, like a thousand points of light in a broad and peaceful sky.”
As a result of that speech, the Bush administration initiated the Points of Light Foundation, honoring voluntary efforts by ordinary citizens who contributed to the betterment of society by helping individuals or groups who need help. The Clinton administration continued that program because it was a non-partisan way of recognizing people who went the extra mile to help others.
People have told me of your work with the less fortunate in Chinatown and how you have made a positive impact on so many lives. We have our own Points of Light Foundation here at the city which we call Papa Kikolama. Our award is the Hana Maika’i which literally means “good job.” Like a point of light your generosity has illuminated the darkness surrounding the less fortunate and has given them hope and the opportunity to help themselves find a better life.
It is my pleasure to forward to you a Hana Maika’i certificate signifying your dedicated service to the needy.
Sincerely,
JEREMY HARRIS
Mayor
